Makeshift Roller Coasters and Coffee Time

Growing up on my family’s ranch was an experience unlike any other. With rolling acres of Texas Hill Country as our playground and a close-knit crew of cousins right next door, every day was a new adventure. We spent hours racing through the pastures on four-wheelers and golf carts, kicking up dust trails and carving out our own little corners of paradise. When we weren’t racing across the ranch, we were knee-deep in creek beds or trying to figure out how to create a parachute from bed sheets. And in case you were wondering, no, it is not possible for a bedsheet parachute to hold the weight of a 10-year-old boy.

One of my favorite memories from those carefree days was the time my older cousin Hannah and I decided to build a "rollercoaster" for the Ez-E-Go. In our minds, it was going to be the most epic ride ever, with twists, bumps, and maybe even a few jumps if we could figure it out. The execution, however, didn’t go quite as planned. Let’s just say that when we hit a curve a little too fast, the Ez-E-Go flipped over! Thankfully, no one was hurt—except maybe our pride—but we immediately knew we had to keep this under wraps. We begged our younger cousins not to tell a soul. Luckily, after a little bribing, they agreed. To this day, it’s a story we laugh about, but at the time, it was serious business.

Beyond the excitement of our daily ranch adventures, there was something even more special waiting at the end of each day. Something our family coined as “coffee time”. This gathering, which is how I developed a coffee addiction at the young age of six, was spent at my grandparents’ house around 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Our Nana would always have something freshly baked whether it was a batch of lemonade cookies or her famous 1-2-3-4 cake (always adorned with the sweetest strawberries) and good ‘ole Community coffee. This time together was spent laughing and talking on their back porch and possibly sneaking in a couple rounds of Dominos. While the treats were unmatched, it was the sense of togetherness that made coffee time so meaningful. We would gather around, sharing stories from our day and soaking up the warmth and love that filled my grandparent’s home.

Even today, coffee time remains a cherished tradition in our family when we are at the ranch. No matter how old we get or how far we might wander, we still come together in the afternoons to relive those simple moments of connection. Nana still bakes, and we still gather around for coffee and conversation, just like we did when we were kids.

Growing up on the ranch gave me a sense of freedom and adventure, but it’s the traditions and the time spent with family that have left the deepest imprint. Those memories of wild rides, creek bed explorations, and, of course, coffee time with my grandparents and cousins are treasures I’ll carry with me forever.
