Lessons We Can Learn from Javelinas

Javelinas, often misunderstood, are fascinating creatures with lessons to teach us all. Native to the rugged landscapes of Texas, these desert-dwelling animals offer more than just a glimpse into wildlife. Over my years of living on the ranch, I have watched these animals closely, and sometimes getting a little too close for comfort.

It was recenlty when I was sitting at the dinner table talking to my family about these unique critters and telling the tales of some pretty funny (and not so funny) encounters. Later that evening I was sitting in my recliner, as I always do in the evening, thinking about the stories told. As I was reminising, I started to think about how we could all learn a few things from Javelinas.

Lesson 1: Be Yourself

Javelinas are often mistaken for wild pigs, but they are actually members of the peccary family, a species native to the Americas. Unlike pigs, which are omnivores and primarily eat plants, including fruits, seeds, and cacti, and they have a distinct musk that sets them apart. While many people think of them as pests, they play an essential role in the ecosystem by helping to disperse seeds and maintain plant health.

Despite their tough, sometimes intimidating appearance, javelinas are individuals, just like us. They don’t try to be something they’re not—they are proudly peccaries. This reminds us to embrace who we are, not who others expect us to be. After all, true success comes from staying authentic to ourselves.

Lesson 2: Be Loyal

Javelinas are known for their loyalty and strong social bonds. One unforgettable story comes from my friend Danny, who once fostered a lost baby javelina. After several attempts to release it back into the wild, the javelina refused to leave and ended up living with Danny and his family for years. Over time, the javelina adapted to family life, acting like a dog—loyal, protective, and loving.

Danny’s story serves as a beautiful reminder that loyalty runs deep, even in the animal kingdom. Whether it’s a bond with our family, friends, or even a furry (or musky?) companion, loyalty strengthens the ties that bind us and enriches our lives in ways we can’t always predict.

Lesson 3: Take Care of Your Squad

As mentioned above, javelinas are incredibly family-oriented creatures, living in groups known as squadrons. These units provide protection and support, as members work together to find food and safeguard each other from predators. Their strong sense of community is evident—when they are displaced or face danger, they show resilience and a fierce determination to protect one another.

It’s no surprise that, after facing near extinction, it’s been difficult to reintroduce javelinas to areas where their population has diminished. Their tight-knit family structure makes them more vulnerable to disruptions, but it also shows just how essential these bonds are to their survival.

This family-first mentality is something we can apply to our own lives. When we prioritize our loved ones and nurture our “squad,” we can face challenges with greater strength and resilience.

Lesson 4: The Importance of Preservation

As we continue to see more javelinas in our communities, it’s a sign of the positive impact of wildlife preservation efforts. With the rise in conservation initiatives and the protection of natural habitats, these fascinating creatures are making a comeback in many areas of Texas. However, their future still depends on our commitment to preserving the land they call home.

If we want future generations to enjoy the sight of javelinas and other wildlife, we must continue to safeguard our natural environments and work together to maintain biodiversity.

At HPW Ranch, we are proud to be part of this ongoing effort. Over the years, we’ve been fortunate enough to witness the beauty of javelinas and many other wildlife species. Come see for yourself, and let these creatures remind you of the importance of authenticity, loyalty, and family.
